Treating land for enhancing or protecting the amenities of a site and the locality in which it is situated.

You can garden successfully in Arizona, but you may need to throw away conventional ideas of lawns and borders and adapt to its semi arid environment. In fact Arizona is famous for its flora and fauna. So much so that a major garden at Stanford University California is named the Arizona Cactus Garden, and there are numerous botanic gardens in Arizona where you can go for They would include:-
  • Arboretum at Arizona State University - Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona
  • The Arboretum at Flagstaff - Flagstaff, Arizona
  • Arizona Cactus Botanical Garden - Bisbee, Arizona
  • Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum - Tucson, Arizona
  • Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park - Superior, Arizona
  • Desert Botanical Garden - Phoenix, Arizona
  • Forever Ranch and Gardens - near Yucca, Arizona
  • Navajo Nation Zoo and Botanical Park - Window Rock, Arizona
  • Tohono Chul Park - Tucson, Arizona
  • Tucson Botanical Gardens - Tucson, Arizona
So these places could usefully be your first port of call. Take note of the plants that do well and that you can reasonably expect to grow (to grow a Saguaro Cactus in your own back garden is really the stuff of dreams).

Non Arid Plants

But you may need to allow for non-arid plants in your garden's landscaping, and here you will need to consult a slightly more theoretical source - the United States Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone map. Find out what zone you are, and choose plants that are labelled for your zone. If you are careful you should be able to get plants that will survive and thrive.

Go Australian.

Another approach is to go Australian. There is a wealth of lovely plants from Australia - Callistemons, "Blackboys", Hardenbergia, Banksias. They will love hot conditions but be very careful about their hardiness. Non Arid Plants

Go South African.

A huge selection of Proteas, and wonderful Lithops, Faucarias, and mesembryanthemums of every sort. Some are annuals. Non Arid Plants

Mixing and Matching.

Take careful note of the different types of plants you are interested in. The "architectural" ones, that is to say the trees and large shrubs, will form the backbone of your garden landscaping. They are not to be moved at a whim, and must adapt to your local microclimate. The lower tiers can be annuals which don't need to survive winter cold, but can also be small plants that can be put outdoors in the summer (disguise their pots under gravel or mulch) or protected if winter cold is expected, with fleece.
