Looking at your garden as a landscape will make the ideas flow: think of it as a natural thing, dependent upon weather soil plant and animal life - where you are privileged to intervene.
So if you've been looking at your yard or garden and are in despair at the amount of weeds, or dismayed that the whole thing looks like a desert, or daunted by the amount of gardening you have to do, or fed up with the fact your garden takes so long to keep tidy, then maybe some of our free landscaping ideas will help to start the ideas to flow.
. Dealing with your lawn. The trouble with lawns is that they are very artificial - most people try for a lawn with short weedfree turf, and that's most of the problem. You will need to apply fertilizer, and then to eliminate the weeds that have invaded for a good meal you then need weedkiller. You want it short which pushes up its water demands, and increases your mowing effort. You should devote a large part of your lawn to rough grass - we suggest the commonly used areas are cut short as normal lawn, but leave long grass in attractive islands for the rest. This long part needs mowing infrequently, will not succumb so quickly to drought, will provide more biodiversity. If you have young children they will adore these areas for games. You may even encourage wildlife visitors. Wild Flower meadows. Another free landscaping idea - really a variation on the previous, and its not usually free because you will probably want to buy seed. But there is another way - which is to harvest seed by mowing natural grassland in the autumn, and laying the hay on your meadow or lawn. Dealing with weeds. What a pain they are, but simply Mother nature is trying to repopulate the ground you've so lovingly cleared. Our free idea here is to get in there first - most gardens and yards are not planted closely enough. You can remedy this for free by acquiring more plants from neighbours, friends, and from your own garden by propagation. It is best if you can have a small nursery area - raise plants directly for your own needs, for swaps and for gifts. Make it your next project. Overdo it if you can - plant too much, and then select. Waste areas - just leave them weedy, it will encourage wildlife (and that's the only excuse you need). Acquiring new plants - free seeds for free landscaping. We've mentioned that new plants can come from many sources, but our idea here is to collect seeds from the wild, from gardens where the owners don't mind you taking the surplus, from parks, from botanic gardens. It is much more acceptable to take seeds than to steal cuttings, but to be on the safe side you should ask first. Free landscaping ideas from nature You can do this for yourself on country walks, and even in busy towns. Look for habitats that resemble difficult areas in your back yard (eg shady corners). What plants do they contain ? Do you go to local parks and public gardens ? - a wealth of free landscaping ideas from here. You will want to compile a list of places that are worth visiting - try the internet for lists of botanic gardens, plant collections and so on. Books, Magazines, Garden Centres, Nurseries. These are great sources of landscaping ideas. Not all free of course because of their commercial aims, but borrow books from your library and read for free in the quiet of a good bookshop. Ask a friend. Make sure the friend is knowledgeable first - you only have to look at their garden or backyard. People love giving advice and tips, and we are so often reluctant to listen that we miss out on their expertise. Try it. It works.
